The term ‘sustainability’ has become rather vague, many people using it as a catch-all for issues caused by climate change and ‘carbon economics’. Whilst working towards ‘net zero’ in terms of carbon emissions is essential for the long-term continuity of the human race, we have a view that is at the same time broader, yet more focused upon driving outcomes.
For centuries humankind has exploited the world’s resources in its pursuit of civilisation and comfort. Over time those resources have become depleted. At the same time utilising exploited resources has created a spiral of side-effects to the extent that the global environment has become unable to cope and respond. In brief it has become unbalanced – it is now time for a new balancing act.
It’s a question of choosing what to invest in.
Investment is both financial and emotional and everybody has the choice of where to invest. You can choose to invest in things that exploit the environment, or you can choose to invest in things that conserve the environment. As part of that equation, you can also choose to invest in technologies that offer remedies to the vicissitudes of exploitation.
It’s not only the environment that gets exploited. For centuries business has exploited people too. That is fundamentally wrong. It was never a good or fair choice to make.
